Consuming the right food for kids is tough. They don’t want to try new foods. Foods that are healthy don’t always taste good. Between work, school, sports, house work, there’s never enough time to create well balanced meals.
I understand all of it. Heck, I even live it! With three kids 4 years and under everything is a challenge. But I’m here to help. We don’t have to live life just bumbling around. We can take a proactive approach to getting the goals we desire.
Here are some ways we get our kids to eat anything from carrots to broccoli to green beans and more!
Let Them Help
We allow our kids to help cook the meal. We will let them help season the food, stir the pot, or get things out of the refrigerator for us. We make them our sous chef. Sometimes we have to err on the side of safety and remove them from the stove and kitchen but when kids are involved with cooking a meal they are more apt to eat it.
Consistent Lunches
Each lunch we pack for them has the same food over and over again with some variation. This way they don’t get a bunch of junk food one day and healthy food the next day. They’ll start to get accustomed to the junk food and never go with the healthy choice. Here’s what they get:
Breakfast – Blueberry pancake muffins, sausage patties, grapes, Honey Oat Cheerio Cereal
Lunch – Protein/Pizza, Veggie Bites from Aldi, strawberries and blueberries or other fruit medly
Snack – Carrots and ranch, 2 x Beef sticks and 1 x Cheese stick
Easy Access to Healthy Food
We allow our kids free range of the refrigerator. If they are hungry we want them to feel empowered to get something. Sometimes this has backfired but more times than not, it’s been a good thing. Our fruit and veggies are located in the bottom produce drawers. Our boys can go get them whenever they want within reason. We also keep bananas or oranges around on the counter or table for them to get it, too. When access to food is easy, they will eat it. So we try to keep the healthy stuff around.
Getting proper nutrition for kids is tough. It never easy to get them eat things they need to eat but following these few tips can help make the process that much smoother.
