Write Things Down, Then Do Those Things

Ok. Time for me to be honest. This is one area where I lack and am trying to be better. A lot of the thing I say, I do. This is one of the thing where I need to say it, so I can be better at it.

This is a coaching post to myself, for myself, and I hope you find value in it, too.

I have a pretty good memory, I think. I do well at Jeopardy! and trivia. I can remember facts, memories, and events. This is helpful because I can remember what I need to do without writing it down.

I need to start writing things down. Not because my memory is declining but because when I don’t have a “to-do” list it becomes a “to-don’t” list. I find ways to get out of it or I come up with excuses not to do things.

When I have a true to-do list, it’s a tangible reminder on what I need to do to be better for that day, week, month, or period. I can see it. It’s a reminder.

There’s an old comic or meme that says, “Yes, honey. I will fix it. You don’t need to remind me every 6 months.” That’s how I feel some days, not because my wife tells me, but my brain tells me and I just push it aside.

When I make a list, I have a urge to check it off. I get a sense of accomplishment out of it.

So if you find that you keep pushing things off or aside for lesser important things, make a check-list or to-do list. Put it in public place (ie kitchen, bathroom, fridge, etc) so you see it everyday. You might find you can accomplish a lot more when you do.
