Reverse Engineer your Goals

When you go to set your goals start with the end point in mind. We, as humans, are terrible at estimating what we can do in a set amount of time. When you think about goals, think about the end game first. Then make a plan to get there.

Let me break this down on how this could work:

If you want to lose 60 pounds in a year as your goal break it down by months.

So 60 pounds in a year is 5 pounds a month. Then you can break down that into about 1 +/- pound a week.

The 60 pounds in a year seems really daunting. It seems like a lofty goal, but when you look at what it actually is just about a pound a week, it’s really manageable.

You can use the 1 pound per week as the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) that’s measured but your metrics would be your work out schedule (days and minutes), your food/caloric intake, and anything else that you might want to measure.

Your KPI is what’s telling you if you are on the right track or not. In this case it’s showing you if you are on pace to achieve your goal. When you look at that scale each week, are you losing that 1 pound each week or is it more? Is it less?

What do your metric show? When you look at your work out schedule, your food intake, or the amount of water you are drinking – are they aligning to losing 1 pound each week or is it going in the wrong direction?

By taking the time and carefully identifying your goal and achieving clarity, the roadmap to get there becomes clear and obvious.

The next time you say, “I wish I could do that” – reverse engineer it. See if you can get there.
