The Rule of 33

You may have heard of the phrase, “You’re the average of the 5 people you hang around with”. Which actually could be how you live your life. You might actually be the average of those 5 people.

But I’m posing a different way of looking at it. I was thinking about this the other day but I saw a clip from a The Real Business Owners podcast that made sense to me.

The guy in the clip explained it as: The rule of 33. We should be spending 33% of our time with people above us, 33% with people like us, and 33% with people below us. We should be rising to the top asking questions, being with people like us, and pulling up people below us.

I tend to agree with this. I am trying to spend time and fill my FB feed with people who are more successful than me in multiple areas of my life. I want to aspire to their heights and do great things like them.

People who are with me, are my support group. We are going through the same things and fight the same battles. We are brothers (and sisters) in arms. We experience the same “suck”.

I never felt closer to a group of people than when I worked at a summer camp. We worked in the trenched together and dealt with the same issues. It was with them we got through the summer together. All 10 weeks. It was a long process but we did it.

Lastly, there are the people that see me a role model. Who call me when they need me or seek advice from me. I don’t shy away from these people. I want to see them rise to new height and unlock new levels. By people a coach and mentor to them, I can help them read the label of the box they are in. Help navigate their blind spots.

In doing so, I can find my own blind spots. I can recognize my own pitfalls and avoid them. I use the knowledge I gain from the other 66% to help them.

Working and spending time in all these areas helps me to be the best version of myself personally and professionally.

I hope you can do the do the same to be the most successful version of yourself.
