Have you ever made a tough decision in life and weren’t sure where to begin? I know I have.
When you make decisions, do you have a set of parameters or guidelines to filter it? I know I didn’t.
This was all before I made core values. Core values help drive you on a path toward success.
As a dad, I have core values: Personal Fitness, Work Ethic, Be a Teacher/Learner, and have a Sense of Humor. These are there to guide me to be the best dad I can be.
I need to be fit, I need to work hard, I need to stay educated and pass my learning to my kids and other, and I need to laugh.
If I’m doing something, or not doing something, that violates these core values then I need to re-evaulate my decisions.
Likewise as Tim Valli, I have my own core values and standard that I need to uphold. Responsibility, Effort, Aspirations, and Persistence.
I need to be responsible for my actions of myself and my family, I need to give my best effort each day, I need to aspire to be greater than my current self, and I need to be persistent in my work and career.
I read these values to myself each night after I journal. I internalize it and prepare for the next day with these values in mind. They help to see and know where I faltered in the day and I look ahead to be better.
As a human, I do fall short of these values occasionally. I might miss a day reading or my best effort is only 70% of my normal effort.
But that’s ok. I know and I realize that I’ve fallen short of the standard and I can make up for it the next day. I’ll have to read a little bit more or I’ll have try harder to get something done I put off.
Knowing and understanding is half the battle; the other half is holding yourself accountable to the mission andvalues.
