Rose, Bud, Thorn, Pesticide

I heard on a podcast the other day this phrase “Rose, Bud, Thorn, Pesticide”. It relates to looking at your day or recapping things you have going on.

A rose – something you enjoyed or something positive that happened

A bud – something that is aspiring or uplifting, something you look forward to

A thorn – A negative event that happened

Pesticide – something you are not looking forward to

I use this occasionally when I journal. Some days are ho-hum. Nothing really sticks out or stands out, but when I filter my writing through this lens I can squeeze more sentences together.

By using a framework like this on a consistent basis, I can view my days through a filter and really dig deep and work on things that negatively impacted myself while looking at the bright side and being grateful for the things that went well.

If you ever find yourself stuck, and need to put some thoughts on paper, look at it through these four pillars. You’ll find there is more to be grateful for and there’s always something to do better or get ready for.
